In a recent appearance, star Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing Vladimir Putin in a new film. This production, however, could coincide so closely with the mythologized image promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment instead of a challenge.

The Manufactured Strongman

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's pop-culture machine have worked together to forge a made-to-measure version of Putin. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a television show released last October, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “rescue” Russia from chaos. Although he is called a different name, the implication is unmistakable: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative instead of debunking it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the Putin cult by framing him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the focus to the political machinery around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, the president is shown as having been picked by influential figures to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, desiring permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The presidency was in essence a casting call with no shortage of contenders. Central to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country de facto.

The grittier version prompted local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, fueling the increasing trend to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

With Jude Law, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the authorities will not miss the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's exclusion of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

Domestically, Putin is often an all-powerful presence who never appears directly. His influence is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. Now, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the exact legends it perhaps aims to examine.
