California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Instance in 25 Years.

Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is experiencing drought conditions. This milestone comes on the heels of difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified blaze threats and pressured its huge agribusiness.

A Chart Reveals Zero Dryness

The latest assessment from the national drought tracker illustrated that all of California is clear of dry or drought conditions. This change resulted from weeks of above-normal rainfall that replenished key lakes like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their long-term norms.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a climate scientist.

From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations

The path to this point featured intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing widespread flooding, electrical failures, and deaths. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Until late December, areas like the state's northeast corner were still classified as abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January finally erased those remaining dry spots.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

But, experts warn that the end of drought status does not mean being out of the woods. Latest data of the high-elevation snow indicate it is roughly seven-tenths of the typical level.

This frozen reservoir, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for future water availability. Hydrology managers stress that it is premature to draw conclusions for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” explained a California water official. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, attention turns to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health for the rest of the year.
