Hurricane Melissa Intensifies While Barrels Towards the Island Nation

Tropical Storm the storm is forecast to become a uncommon Category 5 cyclone as it veers toward Jamaica, bringing life-threatening sudden floods and landslides.

The hurricane, which had winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting north-west in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to reach land by midweek, based on data from weather experts.

Warnings of power cuts and disruption to utilities have been released as the hurricane produces up to thirty inches of rain and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Take cover without delay," inhabitants have been told.

Melissa is the 13th hurricane in the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season, which normally finishes in the eleventh month.

Locals are being advised to secure their homes with protective bags and wooden boards, and to gather basic necessities.

Alerts are also in effect for parts of Haiti including the main city, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is expected to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Mudslides already being caused by the cyclone have caused two deaths in the country, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Future Path

The hurricane is predicted to cross the island nation by midweek before traveling via the Greater Antilles and out into the open ocean.

By the moment it reaches Cuba, it is anticipated to have reduced to a category three storm.
